Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first Black woman in the United States to earn a medical degree in 1864.

Throughout history, women have made significant contributions despite the many challenges they faced. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was one such woman.

Rebecca Lee Crumpler (née Davis) was born on February 8, 1831, in Delaware. She was raised in Pennsylvania by her aunt, who cared for people who could not access doctors. Watching her aunt help others inspired Rebecca to pursue medicine because she wanted to “relieve the suffering of others.”

At a time when opportunities for Black Americans—especially women—were extremely limited, Rebecca gained clinical experience working under physicians before enrolling at the New England Female Medical College in Boston. In 1864, she became the first Black woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.

After the American Civil War, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau providing medical care to newly freed Black Americans who had little access to doctors. Despite facing constant racism and sexism, she continued treating patients—including many who could not afford to pay.

In 1883, she published “A Book of Medical Discourses,” the first medical book written by a Black physician in the United States. Her book focused on maternal health, child health, prevention, and practical medical care for families.

Today, many universities study Dr. Crumpler’s work as part of the history of medicine and public health. She is recognized as a trailblazer.

✨ Rebecca Lee Crumpler faced enormous barriers—but she persevered and helped change the future of medicine.

Throughout history, women have made significant co Throughout history, women have made significant contributions despite the many challenges they faced. Emily Stowe was one such woman.

A quote from Emily Stowe:
"The future of women depends upon the course of women today."

Emily Stowe (née Jennings) was born on May 1, 1831, in Norwich Township, Ontario (then Upper Canada). She grew up in a family that valued education and independence for girls. Her mother taught her and her five sisters at home and introduced them to herbal healing and natural medicine. In 1845, at the age of 15, Emily became a schoolteacher, and by 23, she became the first female principal of a public school in Upper Canada. In the early 1860’s, Emily wanted to study medicine, but at that time, Canadian medical schools refused to admit women, so she decided to study in the United States. From 1865 to 1867, she attended the New York Medical College and Hospital for Women. After graduating in 1867, she returned to Canada (Toronto), determined to practice medicine. Despite licensing barriers, she began treating patients. Male doctors tried to block her from practicing medicine. She was even charged with practicing without a license. Emily became an advocate for women’s rights. In 1877, she founded the Toronto Women’s Literary Club, which later evolved into the Canadian Women’s Suffrage Association, which advocated for women’s rights and the right to vote. In 1880, she was officially granted a medical license to practice in Canada. In 1883, her advocacy led to the creation of the Woman’s Medical College, the first institution in Canada that allowed women to train as doctors.

Despite many barriers, Emily persisted and ultimately opened the door for women’s access to medical education in Canada and helped launch the early women’s rights movement, including the right to vote, changing laws and social expectations.

Owning Our Story Quote by Brené Brown: "Owning o Owning Our Story

Quote by Brené Brown: "Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it."

This quote greatly resonates with me. I'm 63 years old. I spent most of my life running from my story. It wasn't until my 50's that I started to face my story head-on and push through to the other side. I sought personal therapy, joined a women's group, and read numerous personal development books. My journey has led me to become a Certified Life Coach and develop my Women Rising Above Coaching Services to inspire and empower women who want to gain clarity, take action, and make progress towards the goals they want to achieve. To be stronger and more confident. To thrive, not just survive.

What is Procrastination? Procrastination: The act What is Procrastination?

Procrastination: The act of delaying or avoiding tasks. It's when you know you should begin, yet find yourself choosing another activity instead. People usually procrastinate if the task seems overwhelming, unclear, emotionally uncomfortable, or dull. It's less about laziness and more about our natural tendency to avoid discomfort.

Common types of procrastination:
🔸The Perfectionist – waits for the “right time” or perfect plan
🔸The Overwhelmed Starter – doesn’t know where to begin
🔸The Avoider – puts off tasks tied to fear or self-doubt
🔸The Energy Mismatch – tries to do hard things when tired/drained
